There is an old Chinese proverb stating that broken glass reflects more light. It is true that shattered glass produces some incredible, bright, sometimes bedazzling reflections and colours.
If this is true is it possible that this image can be extended to us, as humans? What if life has not only bruised and abused us but completely shattered us beyond recognition so that we feel whole no more? Can we bring light into the lives of others because we are broken?
What about omelettes? Can broken people who come together form something completely new that nourishes others? When those tough outer shells are cracked and the softness inside flows out they can surely come together to form something that has a purpose and importance all of its own.
This is my attempt to show in poetry a broken person being built up again.
Desperate days, endless pain
Heartache, lifelong friend
Standing hopeless, cliff’s edge
Rocks, destruction, end
A shove, a push
We fall again
Crushed
Broken
Done
Shattered glass,
Fragmented dreams,
Hope that fled,
The end we guessed.
But as the sun departing bows,
A chorus, clapping, laughter, cheers
Rejoicing reigns from up above
As in my brokenness the light reflects
An everlasting selfless love.
