#BlackHistoryMonth Drawings / Thoughts

One thing I love to do is sketch people who have inspired millions of people through their lives and achievements. This is why I drew Alicia Keys, who has inspired so many people, especially young women. Likewise it’s what drew me to Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King who fought for the rights and freedom of black people, flawed though they were as individuals.

There is, however, something that leads me to draw a black face more than a white one. It’s not just the emotional expressiveness that I see but the following is unfortunately still true : there are many places in the world where black men, women and children have to fight harder for the same things that white people take for granted. Still. After all this time. I guess it’s that perseverance, strength and courage that I admire most.  Plus…you can’t disagree that “Black is beautiful!” This is my celebration of black history, black victories and black beauty. Celebrating the ones who have gone, the ones who continue to inspire us each day, and the ones who have yet to make their inevitable mark on the world  #BlackHistoryMonth
